A complete Kerala travel guide with season-by-season packing lists, the best time to visit, and a 7-day itinerary through Kochi, Munnar, Alleppey and Varkala — written for first-time and repeat visitors alike.

7 days 520 km circuit Best: Oct–Mar

How to start

Fly into Kochi (COK). The circuit loops back to Kochi, or fly out of Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) from Varkala.

Where to stay

2 nights Kochi · 2 nights Munnar · 1 night Thekkady · 1 night houseboat · 1 night Varkala.

Budget per person

Backpacker ₹20–30k · Mid ₹50–75k · Luxury ₹1.2L+ · Excludes flights. Houseboats range from ₹8k–35k per night.

What to pack for Kerala

Kerala's climate shifts dramatically across its three seasons — and between the hot backwaters, cool hill stations and humid coast. Use the checklist for your travel month.

Winter (Oct–Mar)

Best time to visit

  • Light cotton T-shirts, 5–7
  • Loose linen or cotton pants, 3–4 pairs
  • One light sweater or fleece for Munnar mornings (10–15°C)
  • Comfortable walking shoes + flip-flops
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+, sunglasses, wide-brim hat
  • Mosquito repellent (DEET or natural)
  • Modest cover: scarf/shawl for temples and churches
  • Daypack for treks and boat rides
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Dry bag for phone and wallet on houseboats
Note: This is peak season — book houseboats and Munnar hotels 3–4 weeks ahead. Days are warm (25–32°C); evenings cool down.

Summer (Apr–May)

Hot, good for Ayurveda

  • Ultra-light cotton/linen, 5–7
  • Breathable shorts (beach towns only; not for temples)
  • Wide-brim hat or cap
  • High-SPF sunscreen, lip balm with SPF
  • Electrolyte sachets for heat
  • Light sandals + walking shoes
  • Sunglasses with UV400 protection
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Mosquito repellent (year-round essential)
  • Umbrella for sudden heat-shower bursts
Note: Temperatures reach 35–38°C in Kochi and Alleppey. This is Ayurveda season — many resorts offer discounted treatment packages.

Monsoon (Jun–Sep)

Lush, green, heavy rain

  • Quick-dry synthetic or bamboo-cotton clothing, 5–7
  • Waterproof rain jacket (not just an umbrella — wind is strong)
  • Waterproof sandals or rubber-soled shoes
  • Waterproof cover for phone and electronics
  • Dry bag or ziplock system for documents
  • Light long-sleeve top for mosquito protection
  • Compact umbrella
  • Anti-fungal powder for feet
  • Mosquito repellent (double down — this is peak mosquito season)
  • Extra plastic bags for wet clothes
Note: Heavy afternoon rain is daily. Houseboats still operate but canal cruising may be limited. Landscapes are at their greenest; prices drop 30–40%. Trekking in Munnar may be restricted.

Logistics & practical tips

Best time to visit Kerala

October to March is the sweet spot — dry weather, 20–32°C, clear backwater skies and cool Munnar mornings. April–May is hot (35°C+) but ideal for discounted Ayurveda packages. June–September is monsoon — spectacular green landscapes, daily afternoon rain, and 30–40% lower hotel rates.

Getting around

Hiring a private cab for the full circuit (Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → Varkala → Kochi) costs roughly ₹18,000–25,000 for 7 days including driver allowance. Public buses connect all towns but eat into sightseeing time. Trains are limited in the hills; Alleppey to Varkala has no direct train.

Houseboat booking tips

Book through licensed operators on the Kerala Tourism site or established brands like Rainbow Cruises or Spice Coast Cruises. Budget houseboats (₹8,000–12,000/night) are basic but clean. Premium (₹25,000–35,000/night) offer glass-walled bedrooms, a chef and upper deck. Check AC hours — some switch off at night.

What to wear at temples

Modest dress is required at all Hindu temples and some churches. Men should wear long pants; women should cover shoulders and knees. A light cotton scarf or shawl is the most versatile item in your Kerala packing list — it works as sun cover, temple wrap and AC-layer.

Food & water safety

Eat at busy local restaurants — high turnover means fresh food. Kerala's seafood is exceptional but stick to reputable kitchens for raw preparations. Drink only bottled or filtered water. Tap water is generally not safe for tourists. Carry oral rehydration salts in summer.

Extending the trip

Add 2 nights in Wayanad for rainforest trekking and Edakkal Caves, 1 night in Kumarakom for a luxury resort stay on the lake, or head south to Kovalam and Poovar (1.5 hours from Varkala) for quieter beaches.

A minimum of 5 days covers Kochi and the backwaters, but 7–8 days is the sweet spot — it lets you add Munnar's tea hills and Thekkady's wildlife without rushing.
