The Golden Triangle India Itinerary
7 days in Delhi, Agra & Jaipur

A complete day-by-day plan for India's most-travelled circuit — written by people who've done it dozens of times. Real transport timings, hotels at three price points, food picks, and the small tricks that make the difference between a tour and a trip.

7 days 720 km loop Best: Oct–Mar

How to start

Fly into Delhi (DEL). The loop ends back in Delhi or Jaipur (JAI) — both have international flights.

Where to stay

2 nights Delhi · 2 nights Agra · 2 nights Jaipur · 1 buffer night flex to any city.

Budget per person

Backpacker ₹25–35k · Mid ₹55–80k · Luxury ₹1.5L+ · Excludes international flights.

Day-by-day itinerary

Each day is paced for one major monument plus one neighbourhood or food experience — not a checklist marathon. Adjust the buffer night (Day 7) to add Rishikesh, Varanasi, or Udaipur if you have more time.

Day 1 · Delhi

Arrival & Old Delhi immersion

Evening
Sunset at Humayun's Tomb (it's quieter than the Red Fort and the light is perfect). Dinner at Indian Accent if you're splurging, or Saravana Bhavan for clean South Indian.
Stay: Mid: The Lodhi · Boutique: Bloomrooms New Delhi Railway Station · Luxury: The Imperial
Day 2 · Delhi

New Delhi monuments + Hauz Khas

Qutub Minar at opening (7am) to beat tour buses, then Mehrauli Archaeological Park next door — most visitors skip it and it's stunning. Coffee at Blue Tokai (Saidulajab).
Afternoon
Lutyens' Delhi loop: India Gate → Rashtrapati Bhavan gates → National Museum (allow 2 hours, the Harappan and miniature painting galleries are world-class).
Evening
Hauz Khas Village for sunset over the reservoir and the ruined madrasa. Dinner and cocktails at Comorin or Olive Bar & Kitchen.

Afternoon
Drop bags, lunch at Pinch of Spice (try the galouti kebab). Visit Agra Fort 2–5pm — the views of the Taj from the Musamman Burj are the best in the city.

Logistics & practical tips

Best time to go

October to March. November is peak — clear skies for Taj photos and pleasant 20–25°C days. April–June hits 45°C+ in Agra and Jaipur. Skip July–September unless you want monsoon greenery.

Transport

A private car-and-driver for the full 7 days costs ₹12,000–18,000 and gives you maximum flexibility. Train alternative: Gatimaan Express (Delhi–Agra) + Shatabdi (Agra–Jaipur, Jaipur–Delhi). Book on IRCTC 60 days out.

Taj Mahal tickets

Book online at asi.payumoney.com — saves 30 minutes in queue. Foreigners ₹1,100; mausoleum entry is an extra ₹200. Closed Fridays. Sunrise slot is least crowded.

What to pack

Modest clothing for monuments (shoulders + knees covered). Slip-on shoes — you'll remove them often. A small flashlight for forts. Cash for tips and bazaars; UPI works everywhere else.

Safety & scams

Use Uber/Ola in cities, not street auto-rickshaws unless metered. Skip 'government emporium' detours your driver suggests — they pay commission. Drink only bottled or filtered water.

Extending the trip

Add 2 nights Udaipur (lake palaces) after Jaipur, 3 nights Varanasi (sunrise on the Ganges) after Agra, or Rishikesh (yoga + rafting) as a Delhi day trip extension.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for the Golden Triangle?

Five days is the minimum, but seven days is the sweet spot — it lets you slow down in each city, add a day trip to Fatehpur Sikri or Amber Fort, and avoid back-to-back travel days.

What is the best time to do the Golden Triangle tour?

October to March is ideal — dry, cool weather and the clearest views of the Taj Mahal. April-June is very hot (40°C+); July-September brings monsoon rains.

Is it better to take the train or hire a car?

A private car-and-driver gives you the most flexibility for Agra and Jaipur and costs roughly ₹12,000–18,000 for the full circuit. The Gatimaan Express (Delhi–Agra) and Shatabdi (Agra–Jaipur) trains are faster city-to-city but require separate transfers.

How much does a 7-day Golden Triangle trip cost?

Budget travellers can do it for ₹25,000–35,000 per person, mid-range stays land around ₹55,000–80,000, and luxury heritage hotels push the total past ₹1.5 lakh per person — excluding international flights.
